A benefit has been planned for accident victim Wes Sterling, who suffered multiple injuries in a Feb. 28 wreck on Browning Road.
The benefit, planned for 7 p.m. Saturday at the Leflore County Civic Center, will help to offset medical expenses during Sterling's time in the Greenwood Leflore Hospital and Baptist East Hospital in Memphis.
After spending 12 days in the Greenwood hospital, Sterling was transferred to Memphis, where he has been since March 12. According to Sterling's sister-in-law, Julie Sterling of Indianola, the hospital bill from GLH alone was $98,000. That doesn't include fees from surgery, anesthetics and other doctors.
"He's completely off the ventilator now and breathing on his own," Julie said. "He now knows where he is and who people are, but he doesn't remember the wreck. He can also move both his arms and legs. We think he's rounded the corner and is on his way back."
Julie also said he will still have to have bone grafts on his arm, and there is the possibility of an additional surgery for a tear in the stomach. He already has had seven surgeries.
Tickets for the benefit will be $10 per person. The benefit will feature entertainment by the Crackerjacks, Steve Chester, Johnny Crocker, Billy Marcus and Christi Alford.
"We're real optimistic and praying a lot," said Ken Gammill, one of the organizers of the benefit.
Tickets are available at Circuit Clerk Trey Evan's office, WYMX Max 99, AmSouth Bank on Park Avenue, Buddy Jones Ford and Lewis Hodge Auto. Tickets also will be sold at the door.
Organizers also are seeking sponsorships for $500 each.
