VICKSBURG - A 20-year-old student has been charged with capital murder after a shooting outside Vicksburg High School left another man dead, authorities said.
"It wasn't a Columbine High School or Pearl High School situation," said District Attorney Gil Martin. "This apparently was something personal between the two of them."
Walter Jefferson, 20, a student at Vicksburg High School, was taken into custody by police shortly after the incident Wednesday afternoon, said Police Chief Tommy Moffett.
He was being held in the city jail but was expected to be transferred to the Warren County Detention Center, police said.
Jefferson is expected to appear in court on Friday, police said.
O'dare Mims, 20, was treated at the scene for a gunshot wound to the chest and was taken to River Region Medical Center in Vicksburg where he was pronounced dead, police said.
He was not a student at the school.
Officials said the shooting occurred about 250 yards away from the main school building on an access road next to the school's football stadium at about 2:30 p.m. Jefferson allegedly drove up to where Mims was hanging out with several others.
Mims approached the car and Jefferson fired one shot with a handgun, Moffett said. He said that it appeared the men had an ongoing feud.
"From all indications there was no one else in harm's way," Moffett said.
Vicksburg-Warren Superintendent of Schools James Price said it was unclear whether the shooting occurred on school property.
"Still at the same time it happened around one of our facilities. We take that very seriously and personally," he said.
Price said there was just a "handful" of students in the area when the shooting occurred.
