A fistfight Friday morning at Amanda Elzy High School resulted in the arrest of 11 students and two adults.
Sheriff Ricky Banks said two groups of students began fighting in a breezeway at the school at about 8:30 a.m., before classes started. The principal and the deputy assigned to the school tried to break up the fight but had to call three more deputies in, Banks said.
The group of juveniles included two 16-year-olds, five 15-year-olds, two 14-year-olds and two 13-year-olds, Banks said.
Two adults also were arrested at the scene. Gloria House, 37, of 211 Bowie Lane, and Tina Williams Tillman, 42, of P.O. Box 3035, both were charged with interfering with officers, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Both were released on bond.
Banks said the fight started after an argument between two groups of students. He said he didn't know what they were arguing about but thought it involved a neighborhood dispute from days before.
The sheriff said the officers almost had the incident under control when House and Tillman came in and began complaining to the teachers and principal. They began cursing and struggling with the officers and had to be restrained, he said.
No weapons were used, and no one had to be hospitalized, Banks said. Two deputies were among the people who were struck.
"It got pretty nasty there for a while, but they got it under control," he said.
Banks said he didn't know whether the youths were still in custody at the Youth Detention Center this morning.
The center's director, Jesse Taylor, was unavailable for comment.
