Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Greenwood Delta Funeral Home with interment in Itta Bena Cemetery. The Rev. Butch Kelly and the Rev. Ricky Wheat will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m.

J.Z. George dominates Leland to take third in 3-2A

The J.Z. George Lady Jaguars claimed the third seed from the Region 3-2A Tournament with a 46-22 win over Leland Friday in North Carrollton.

The Lady Jags will play at Velma Jackson at 6 p.m. Monday in the first round of the North 2A Tournament.

The Mississippi Valley State men’s and women’s basketball teams are in Huntsville, Alabama, to take on SWAC foe Alabama A&M Saturday.
The women’s game tips off at 2 p.m. followed by the men’s contest.
The Devilettes (4-18, 3-8 in the SWAC) are coming off an 86-70 loss to Alabama State Thursday night in Montgomery.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
