Prep track: Pillow squads compete at Prep

Pillow Academy’s girls and boys varsity and junior high track teams competed in the Jackson Prep Invitational Wednesday in Flowood.
The varsity girls had 11 total points, and the varsity boys had just three points. The junior high girls had seven points, and the junior high boys had 32 points.

Carroll teams compete at Lee Invite

Carroll Academy’s girls and boys varsity and middle school teams competed in the Lee Academy Invitational track meet Wednesday in Clarksdale.
Competing in the Division 1 class, the Carroll varsity girls finished with 34 points, and the middle school had 28 points. The varsity boys had 22 points, and the middle school boys had 19 points.

Teacher pay not as poor as portrayed

Early in the 2026 legislative session, Mississippi public school teachers were led to believe that a big raise was coming.

The House passed a bill to give all full-time teachers a $5,000 bump, roughly a 10% increase in pay. The Senate countered with a larger increase, $6,000, but spread over three years.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
