Ex-public works director sues city

The city of Greenwood and Mayor Kenderick Cox are facing a lawsuit from former public works director Susan Bailey after she was not nominated for reappointment.

Bailey, 66, served in that role for 13 years under former Mayor Carolyn McAdams, who was defeated by Cox in the 2025 mayoral election.

Audit: GLH net position is down

Greenwood Leflore Hospital’s net position decreased by $8.69 million during fiscal year 2025 due to a nearly $13.3 million decrease in funding mostly due to the Mississippi Hospital Access Program, according to its annual financial audit presented the hospital board Tuesday.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
