Amanda Elzy senior running back Dephabian Fant took over in the second half of last Friday’s contest against cross-county rival Leflore County.

The 5-foot-5, 160-pound tailback rushed for a career-best 273 yards on 19 carries and scored four touchdowns in leading the Panthers to a 46-38 triumph over the Tigers in a game played at Greenwood’s Bulldog Stadium.

For his efforts, Fant has been named one of the Commonwealth’s Players of the Week. In the first two games of the young season, he has 381 yards rushing.

Elzy (2-0) hits the road Friday night as it goes to Greenville to face O’Bannon High School.

Joining Fant as a Player of the Week is Greenwood High signal caller DeAndre Smith. The sophomore quarterback came out on fire in last Saturday’s 34-6 triumph over Holmes County Central. He completed his first six passes en route to a 16 of 22 night for 335 yards and three touchdowns.

Smith, who was not intercepted, threw one 2-point conversion pass, ran for 34 yards and a touchdown on five carries, and ran in for a 2-pointer.

The Bulldogs (2-0) will play their third straight game at Bulldog Stadium Friday night as they entertain Cleveland Central.

Also earning Player of the Week honors is Carroll Academy’s Morgan Mims. The senior quarterback/ defensive back ran for 220 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries. He had one 2-point run. Mims was 2 of 5 for 17 yards passing without an interception. He had an interception on defense.

Carroll (2-0) begins District 2-3A play Friday night with a home tilt against Benton Academy.

Offensive honorable mentions go to Greenwood’s Warren Smith Jr., Pillow’s Jaden Simcox, Leflore County’s Emanuel Stanley, and J.Z. George’s Deriaun Townsend.

Smith, a senior receiver, had four grabs for 85 yards and a touchdown for GHS.

Simcox, a senior receiver, had three grabs for 93 yards and two scores in the Mustangs’ 52-0 win over Indianola Academy.

Stanley, a senior running back/linebacker, rushed for 122 yards, two touchdowns and a 2-point run on 12 carries. He also had eight tackles on defense.

Townsend, a sophomore running back, gained 164 yards and scored twice on 15 carries in the Jaguars’ 36-20 win over Hamilton. He also had one catch for 16 yards.

Defensive honorable mentions go to Greenwood’s Altoryian Sandifer and Travor Randle, Pillow’s Lawes McCool, Carroll’s Reese Fulton, Leflore’s Javorius Sherrod, and J.Z. George’s Cory Clay.

Sandifer, a sophomore linebacker, recorded eight tackles, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble. Randle, a senior cornerback, had six tackles and broke up four passes.

McCool, a junior linebacker, had three solos and two assists. Fulton, a senior end, had six tackles with four for loss. Sherrod, a sophomore lineman, had eight tackles. Clay, a senior tackle, finished with two solos and five assists.
