Pillow Academy’s comeback bid fell just short as the Mustangs finished third in its three-team conference.

The Mustangs (11-7-1) lost the second game of a doubleheader at Washington School Wednesday night to finish up at 1-5 in the North AAAA, Division II standings. They will host Hartfield Academy, the No. 2 seed from the South, at 6 p.m. Tuesday in a first-round playoff series. Game 2 will be played at Hartfield in Brandon on Thursday. If a third game is needed, it would follow immediately.

On Wednesday, PA scored three runs   in the top of the seventh inning to pull within one at 5-4 — thanks to a three-run homer from Eli Simmons over the left-field wall. Then Washington pitcher Caleb Janous walked Jacob Bush with two outs but followed up with a game-ending strikeout.

PA’s first run came in the fifth on a groundout from Lake Giachelli, making it 5-1.

Pillow lost despite out-hitting Washington six to four.

Sophomore Nolan Marshall took the loss for PA despite a solid performance. He was hurt by three errors behind him and the six walks he issued.

Marshall surrendered five runs — two earned — on four hits over six innings, while striking out three and walking six.

Patrick Spencer got the win for Washington. He allowed four hits and one run over five innings. Janous recorded the last six outs to earn the save for Washington.

They were supported with an error-free outing from the defense.

Simmons went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Pillow.

Gavin Lessley continued to swing a hot stick for PA, with a double to finish 1-for-3. Bush and Marshall also had singles.

Eli Fratesi led Washington with three hits in three at bats. Washington didn't commit a single error in the field.

In the first game Wednesday, the Mustangs won 9-8 after falling 14-3 to Washington in the series opener Tuesday at PA.

Pillow scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning for a 9-7 advantage.  They came off singles by Cody Holmes, Sam Harris and Marshall — combined with two errors and a walk.

Washington added a run in the sixth and had runners at first and second with one out in the seventh. However, Shane Houston Stephens got a strikeout and then a foul tip caught by the catcher to end the contest.

Lessley led PA at the plate with three hits. Lawes McCool had two, including a double, and drove in two runs. Lake Giachelli also had a two-bagger for Pillow.
