Greenwood High School head coach Clinton Gatewood and his staff got to work this past week with the 2019 version of the Bulldogs as they started spring football practice.
The players were in shorts and helmets Tuesday through Thursday, and they are scheduled to practice all five days next week as they prepare for their spring game on May 10 at Starkville High School.
Gatewood will be entering his 10th season as the head coach of the GHS program. The Bulldogs were 11-3 last season as they made it to the North 4A championship game, falling 17-14 to Louisville.
n Pillow Academy: The Mustangs will delay the start of spring football practice as long as the baseball team is in the playoffs, which start Tuesday.
Head coach Tripp McCarty will be in his sixth season at the helm at Pillow, which will open its 2019 season on Aug. 23 at home against Jackson Academy. The Mustangs went 6-7 in 2018.
n Amanda Elzy: The Panthers will start spring drills on Wednesday as they work around state testing.
Head coach Sheldon Hodge will be entering his third season at Elzy in the fall of 2019.
Hodge said the Panthers, who were 5-7 last season, will not play a spring game. They open the 2019 campaign on Aug. 23 at Simmons High School.
n Leflore County: The Tigers will hit the field Monday as they begin preparations for their spring football game on May 16.
Leflore will play Coahoma County in Clarksdale at 5 p.m. on the campus of Coahoma Community College for its spring game.
The Tigers open their 2019 season on Aug. 23 at home against O’Bannon High School. Eric House will be entering his fourth season as head coach of the Tigers in the fall. Leflore went 5-7 last season.
n J.Z. George: The Jaguars got cranked up Wednesday as they prepare for the Ethel High School jamboree on May 16.
J.Z. George is looking to improve on last season’s 0-11 mark under sixth-year coach Ben Burton. The Jaguars will play Leake County and McAdams in controlled scrimmages during the jamboree.
The Jaguars will open their 2019 season on Aug. 23 at home against McAdams.
n Carroll Academy: The Rebels start spring drills Monday at 3:30 p.m. and go for two weeks, ending on May 10 with a scrimmage at Winston Academy involving Winston and Magnolia Heights.
Bo Milton will be in his fifth season at the helm of the Carroll program. The Rebels, who were 7-4 last season and made it to the playoffs, open on Aug. 16 at home against Kirk Academy.
n Delta Streets Academy: The Lions, under the direction of second-year coach Anthony Degani, started spring practice this past week and will continue to do so until their spring game on May 18 against Unity Christian in Leland.
Delta Streets opens its 2019 season on Aug. 23 at North Sunflower Academy in Drew.
