The kickoff to the regular season for prep football may be a week away, but for those wishing to wet their whistle with a little football, they will be able to do so Thursday and Friday with jamborees.

Five of the seven Greenwood-area schools will participate in jamborees one of the two nights as they continue to prepare for season openers on Aug. 23.

Greenwood High School, led by 10th-year head coach Clinton Gatewood, will travel to Louisville High School to take on the Class 6A Meridian Wildcats in a contest that starts at 5:30 p.m.

The Bulldogs are coming off an 11-3 campaign, which saw them drop a 17-14 decision to Louisville in the North State title game. Greenwood opens next Friday against crosstown rival Leflore County.

The Bulldogs return several weapons on offense in senior receiver Kobe Chambers, junior receiver Daylin Metcalf, senior running back Jamarion Addison and sophomore quarterback DeAndre Smith. The defense will be led by tackle Quontavious Lymon, a 6-foot-3, 285-pound senior.

Amanda Elzy will be on the road Friday as it takes on the Canton Tigers at 7 p.m. in a jamboree-style contest. The Panthers were 5-7 a year ago and lost in the first round of the North 3A playoffs to North Panola.

Elzy head coach Sheldon Hodge, entering his third season at the helm, has announced this will be his last year on the sidelines.

The Panthers kick off the regular season next week at Simmons High School, one of the top teams each year in Class 1A.

Leflore County will participate in the Simmons High jamboree in Hollandale Friday. At 6 p.m., the Tigers will play South Delta, and follow that up by taking on Gentry High School. Both games will last one quarter. Gentry and South Delta will play at 6:40, and Simmons and North Side will close out the jamboree.

The Tigers were 5-7 a year ago and lost to South Delta in the first round of the 2A playoffs. Leflore County is now in Class 1A.

Carroll Academy will head to Flora on Thursday to compete in the Tri-County Academy jamboree. The Rebels, under the direction of fifth-year head coach Bo Milton, will play Newton Academy at 3:30 p.m. Carroll returns at 5 p.m. to take on Central Hinds Academy.

The Rebels, 7-4 a year ago, lost in the first round of the State AA playoffs to Centreville last season. Carroll is now in Class AAA and is in District 3 with Indianola, Central Holmes, Benton and Winona Christian.

Carroll opens the 2019 season Aug. 23 at home against Kirk Academy.

Delta Streets Academy will play a varsity and junior high contest against Unity Christian School at Leland High School Friday starting at 6 p.m.

The Lions, who were 5-5 last season, are led this season by T. Mac Howard, who is in his second stint as head football coach.

DSA opens Aug. 23 at North Sunflower Academy.

Pillow Academy and J.Z. George are not playing in jamborees or scrimmages this week.
