Amanda Elzy’s girls and boys basketball teams fell into the consolation round of the Region 3-3A Tournament with losses Thursday in the semifinals at Humphreys County High School in Belzoni.
The Lady Panthers dropped a 45-33 decision to Humphreys County after holding a 21-20 lead at the half. The Cowgirls came out in the second half and outscored Elzy (9-17) 25-12.
Zamiya Brown led Elzy with 16 points. Kennedy Johnson and Ashley Cooper had seven points each.
The Lady Panthers play at 3:30 p.m. Friday against the loser of Thursday’s Ruleville-Coahoma game in the consolation contest.
In the boys game, the Panthers led 6-4 after the first frame but couldn’t hold the lead as Ruleville claimed a 68-54 win. The Tigers took a 20-14 lead at the half and made it 48-37 by the end of the third quarter.
Reginald Miller led Elzy (8-18) with 13 points. Dontavious McGill chipped in 12, and Martrell Boyd had 11. Braxton Lewis tallied six points.
The Panthers play at 5 p.m. Friday against the loser of Thursday’s game between Coahoma and Humphreys County.
n J.Z. George: The Lady Jaguars dropped into the consolation game of the Region 2-2A Tournament with a 62-50 loss to top-seed Calhoun City Thursday in Maben.
Calhoun City broke out to a 26-9 lead after the first quarter. A 16-13 run in the second gave the Lady Wildcats a 42-22 cushion at the half. Calhoun City led 59-33 after the third, but the Lady Jags managed to hold a 17-3 scoring advantage in the final period.
Tashanda Fleming led J.Z. George (7-17) with 21 points. Jakyla Winters chipped in with 18, and Aniya Williams had seven.
The Lady Jags play at 4 p.m. Friday against the loser of Thursday’s East Webster-Eupora contest.
n Delta Streets Academy: The Lions had their season come to a halt as Delta Academy posted a 46-40 win Wednesday night in the first round of the North A Tournament at Calhoun Academy.
Delta Streets (15-14) trailed 11-9 after the first period, 22-18 at the half and 32-29 after the third frame.
Terry Carpenter paced DSA with nine points, and Jalyn Lewis had eight. AJ McGhee had seven, and Jaylen Prayer notched six points.
n Region 3-4A Tournament: The Greenwood boys had to wait a little late to find out their opponent for Friday’s championship game as Gentry and Clarksdale played two overtime periods Wednesday night at Greenwood.
The Rams came out on top 63-60 and will face the Bulldogs at 8:30 p.m.
The Lady Bulldogs take on the Lady Kittens of Clarksdale in the title game at 7 p.m. The girls and boys consolation games will be played at 4 and 5:30 p.m.
