Pillow Academy and Cleveland Central played a barn-burner in Cleveland Thursday night as both teams combined for 26 runs and 43 hits. In the end, the Mustangs prevailed 14-12 in 12 innings.

Pillow (10-2-1) collected 23 hits, which included eight extra-base hits. Nolan Marshall (3-1), who went 3-for-7 at the plate, got the win on the mound as he went the final four innings, allowing four runs on 11 hits, walking one and striking out three. He had a home run, double and single and drove in three runs and scored a pair.

Pillow trailed 4-0 after the first frame but battled back to tie the game at 4-4 with a run in the third and three in the top of the fourth. The Wolves scored a single run in their half of the fourth to lead 5-4.

Each team scored a run in the fifth, and Cleveland went in front 7-5 after six innings. Pillow responded with a three-run seventh to grab an 8-7 advantage, but the Wolves scored one run in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.

After scoreless eighth and ninth innings, Pillow and Cleveland both scored two runs each in the 10th and 11th frames. The Mustangs plated two runs in the 12th and held the Wolves in check to secure the win.

Cody Holmes started the game but only recorded one out. He was charged with three runs (all earned) on one hit with two walks. Lawes McCool went 52/3 innings, giving up four runs on six hits, fanning seven and walking three. Shane Houston Stephens worked the next two innings, allowing one run on two hits, walking two and striking out one.

Marshall worked the next four innings, allowing four runs on 11 hits, walking one and striking out three.

Jacob Bush, who had a key RBI single in the top of the 12th inning, finished with a 4-for-5 showing. He also walked twice, scored two runs and drove in one. McCool had a banner day as he went 4-for-8 with a double and three singles. He scored once and had two RBIs.

Gavin Lessley had a single, two doubles, two walks and two RBIs and scored two runs, while Lake Giachelli had two singles, a double, two RBIs and scored one run. Matthew Jefcoat also had two singles and a double and drove in one run.

Stephens had a single and double and one RBI and scored two runs, and Eli Simmons had a single and scored twice. Sam Harris and Wade Smith drove in a run apiece, and Nelson Hodges and Michael Jefcoat scored one run each.

Pillow is slated to visit conference foe Magnolia Heights Monday for a 6 p.m. varsity contest. The two teams will play a varsity doubleheader Tuesday at Pillow starting at 4 p.m.

• Amanda Elzy: The Panthers’ miscues were too many to overcome as they dropped a 12-2 decision to Region 3-3A foe Yazoo County Thursday in Yazoo City.

Norman Polk took the loss on the mound as he only went 11/3 innings, giving up six runs with one strikeout.

Deontae Neal went the next three 32/3 innings, allowing six runs and fanning four.

Dephabian Fant had a single, walk and scored both runs for Elzy (3-9 overall, 0-7 in district). Kyrus Jones had a triple, and Deontae Neal had an RBI single. Smitdarius Wright had a single.

Elzy entertains Ruleville for a doubleheader Monday and visits Yazoo City Tuesday.
