Amanda Elzy closed out the regular season portion of its schedule Tuesday night with a 15-5 loss at Yazoo City, but got the news later in the evening it had qualified for the Class 3A playoffs when J.Z. George lost 10-0 to Charleston High School.
The Panthers won their final three Region 3-3A games to finish 3-7 in league play, while the Jaguars dropped their last four district games to close at 3-7. In head-to-head games, J.Z. George beat Elzy 7-2 in its first meeting, but the Panthers picked up a 15-3 win last Friday, giving them a seven-run advantage.
Elzy will take on South Pontotoc Friday at 1 p.m. in the first game of the best-of-three series. Game 2 will be played at 4 p.m. If a third game is necessary, it will be played Saturday at 1 p.m. at Elzy.
In Tuesday’s game at Yazoo City, Khyrus Jones started on the mound, yielding 10 runs in two innings to fall to 0-2. He fanned three. Ladarius Davenport worked the last three innings, giving up five runs and striking out two.
Dephabian Fant had a single, double and drove in one run, and Jones collected two singles. Daylen Hayes had a single.
Elzy is 6-10 overall.
n J.Z. George: The Jaguars just couldn’t five their groove in their last three games after pulling off a doubleheader sweep of Ruleville a week ago.
Charleston scored three runs in the first inning, one in the second, two in the fourth and four in the fifth in collecting nine hits.
Michael Bankston (3-4) took the loss on the mound as he surrendered six runs on eight hits in 42/3 innings of work. He walked three and fanned five. Lance Mullen gave up four runs in relief.
Robbie Clunan, Jacob Johnson and Kendrick Head had a single each for the Jaguars (6-14 overall, 3-7 in Region 3).
n Carroll Academy: The Rebels closed out their 2019 campaign under first-year coach Nathan Moncrief with a 22-1 loss to visiting Winona Christian School Tuesday in Carrollton.
Winona scored seven runs in the first frame, 10 in the second and five in the third. Carroll scored its lone run in the first inning.
Carroll ends with a 4-12 overall mark and an 0-8 record in District 1-AA.
