The Pillow Academy soccer team clinched its fifth straight regular-season division title Monday in Greenville, defeating Washington School 4-1.
During that five-year run of division titles, Pillow has yet to lose a division contest.
The Academy AAAA Division II West Division was won with a swarming defense that created strong offensive possessions on Washington’s small field. Sophomore Madison Barlow was able to open the scoring off a pass from Georgia Caroline Self only four minutes into the contest to give Pillow a 1-0 lead.
Sara Presley Howard extended the lead to 2-0 when she scored from 18 yards out right before the half. Caroline Brock hit a beautiful, bending shot from 25 yards out to give Pillow a 3-1 lead halfway through the second half. And Howard closed out the scoring with her own long-range bomb with six minutes left to give Pillow its 4-1 final victory.
Pillow outshot Washington 15-5 for the contest. Pillow experimented with many players switched around, with defensive anchors Madeline Kelly and Caroline Brock playing in the middle of the field, and Self moving to the forward position.
By clinching the No. 1 seed in the West, Pillow will host the No. 2 squad from the East in the first round of the playoffs on Oct 1.
Pillow (6-3) entertains powerhouse Jackson Prep on Thursday. Prep defeated Pillow earlier this year in Jackson, 2-0.
