Pillow Academy is losing an assistant coach while at the same time picking up a familiar face.
Mike Beagle, the school’s offensive line coach and athletic director for boys sports, has been hired to be the new head coach at Kirk Academy in Grenada. That school is under the direction of former Pillow headmaster Jay Watts.
“I am excited about becoming a head coach again. I know it comes with challenges. I enjoy challenges and the process of building a program,” Beagle said. “It’s the next chapter in my life and career.
“I wish all of the kids at Pillow success in their future and down the road and hope through working together will have made some lifelong friends. A special shout out to the PA family for a great six years of my life.”
Beagle came to PA the same year as head coach Tripp McCarty. Both just finished their sixth seasons at Pillow Academy.
“We are very appreciative to the hard work he put into our program,” McCarty said. “And I wish him nothing but the best moving forward.”
But the good news for McCarty is that former PA assistant Jim Crowder is returning. After two years as the head coach at Central Holmes Christian School, where the Trojans went 13-9, Crowder has rejoined McCarty’s staff. The former junior college assistant coach served two years at Pillow under McCarty before taking the head coach job in Lexington.
Current Pillow assistant Mike McLendon will now take over the offensive line. McCarty said he was still working on Crowder’s specific duties, but regardless of what he does, he’s happy to have Crowder back on the staff.
“He is a very passionate and positive coach who brings a lot to the table. We’re excited to get him back in green and gold,” McCarty said.
The PA head coach said he is excited about the future of his program and can’t wait to get back in the weight room with them. But for now, the school, like all in Mississippi, is closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As of now, Pillow is closed until at least April 17.
