The Pillow Academy boys are in third place and the girls presently sit in sixth place after one weekend of the MAIS State AAAA meet held Saturday at Madison-Ridgeland Academy.
Only the 3,200-meter run and field events were conducted Saturday. The remaining running events will take place this weekend at Jackson Prep.
The Mustangs have 55 team points, which trails Washington School and Simpson Academy, both of which have 70 team points. Hartfield is in fourth with 24 points.
Christian Belk, Jaden Simcox and Porter Spell had the best finishes for Pillow Saturday. Belk was second in the high jump in 5-06, and Simcox was second in the long jump in 20-01.50. He was also sixth in the high jump in 5-04. Spell had a second-place showing in the 3,200 run in 11:20.22.
Jeffery Bready took third in the 3,200 run in 11:22.83, and Gavin Lessley was fifth and Grayden McCool seventh in the pole vault in 10-00 and 9-06, respectively.
Frazier Rose was fourth in the shot put in 42-09, and teammate Noah Woodard was seventh in 40-05. Woodard was seventh in the discus in 100-06, and Josh Moor was ninth in 98-08. Alex Lindsey took fourth in the triple jump in 37-02, and Belk was eighth in 34-04.50. Bryce Miller came in 10th in the long jump in 18-04.50.
For the Lady Mustangs, they are in sixth place with 32 points. Washington is first with 66 points, and Simpson is second with 501/2 points. Copiah is third with 46, and Hartfield is fourth with 391/2 points. East Rankin is fifth with 36 points.
Avery Howard had a second in the pole vault in eight feet even. Caroline Brock was second in the triple jump in 32-06.50, and Kayla Brown was fourth in the discus in 82-07. She was seventh in the shot put in 28-06.50, and Sarah Beth Steen came in 10th in the shot in 24-05.50 and 11th in the discus in 56-03.
Claire Coleman was fourth in the long jump in 15-09.50, and Brock was eighth in 14-08.50. Kennasia Davis was ninth in the high jump in 4-02, and Kaylee Blaylock was 10th in four feet. Anna Flowers Hamrick placed seventh and Skyler Phillips eighth in the 3200-meter run in 14:08.49 and 14:31.50, respectively.
n North State A: The Delta Streets Academy boys placed third with 31 team points at the North State A meet, which finished up Saturday at Lee Academy in Clarksdale.
The top four in each event move on to the State A meet, which will be held Friday and Saturday at Jackson Academy and Jackson Prep.
Justin Cooper and Daniel Vargas had a good showing for the Lions in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs. Cooper, a senior, won the 1,600 with a time of 5:19.36, and he was first in the 3,200 with a time of 12:11.12. Vargas, a seventh-grader, was second in the 3,200 in 12:11.59, and he was third in the 1,600 in 5:26.01.
The two were part of the 4x800 relay team that placed second with a time of 10:06.97. They were joined by Dariyus Johnson and Narada Smith.
Jakerriam Hemphill placed second and Emanuel Alston was third in the discus with throws of 109-09.50 and 105-06, respectively. Jeb Osborn just missed out on qualifying for state as he placed fifth in the 800-meter run in 2:25.88.
n North 2A: The Carroll Academy boys came in sixth place while the girls finished eighth at the North 2A meet.
For the Rebels, Drew Thomas got third in the 3,200-meter run in 12:50.50, and he was fourth in the 1,600-meter run in 5:46.75. Austin Smith was third and Jeb Beck fourth in the shot put with tosses of 41-11.50 and 41-03.50.
The 4x400-relay team of Mathis Beck, Bryce Collier, Logan Taylor and Morgan Mims was third in 3:55.62, and the 4x800 team of Mathis Beck, Noah Beck, Collier and Thomas was third in 10:07.03. Noah Beck finished fifth in the 800 run in 2:30.37. The only event the girls qualified in was the 3,200 relay as they placed fourth with a time of 12:38.38.
