Justin Cooper, a senior at Delta Streets Academy, had two second-place finishes at the state track meet over the weekend.

Delta Streets Academy’s Justin Cooper left the MAIS State 1A meet Saturday with two second-place finishes to cap his high school career.

Cooper ran a personal best 11:48.47 in the 3,200-meter run to place second to Dallas Stricker of Heritage Christian School, who had a time of 11:29.02.

He was second in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:16.52, just three seconds behind Columbus Christian’s Ethan Sevier, who had a time of 5:13.37.

Two of Cooper’s teammates, Emanuel Alston and Jakerriam Hemphill, fared well in the discus throw for the Lions. Alston was third with a toss of 98 feet, 2 inches, and Hemphill was fourth with a throw of 91 feet, 7 inches.

DSA’s 4x800 relay team finished seventh with a time of 10:29.91. Team members are Cooper, Narada Smith, Dariyus Johnson and Daniel Vargas.

Delta Streets finished with 29 team points to place ninth overall. Tunica Academy was first with 1081/2 points.

n Carroll Academy: The Rebels placed eighth overall out of 15 teams competing in the MAIS Class 2A meet at Jackson Prep in Flowood.

Carroll had 23 team points. Centreville won the boys’ division with 155 points.

Jeb Beck had the highest finish for the Rebels with a fourth-place showing in the shot put with a toss of 41-02.75. Teammate Austin Smith was fifth with a throw of 40 feet, 5 inches.

Drew Thomas was fifth in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:34.42, and he was sixth in the 3,200-meter run in 12:43.77.

The 4x400 relay team came in fifth in 3:53.59. Team members are Mathis Beck, Noah Beck, Bryce Collier and Logan Taylor.

Carroll only had one entry in the girls’ field as the foursome of Destiny Kelly, Shelbi Kelly, Natalie Kelly and Dru Chamblee were fourth in the 4x800 relay with a time of 12:10.26.

n J.Z. George: The Jaguars only had two entries at the State 3A meet Friday at Pearl High School.

Senior Montavis “Hulk” Jenkins placed fifth overall in the discus competition with a throw of 123 feet, 10 inches.

The foursome of Malik Branch, Devontae Smith, Ceasa Glenn and Marquinn Watt placed eighth in the 4x800 relay with a time of 9:38.27.

n Amanda Elzy: Elzy also competed in the State 3A meet Friday with one boy and five girls participating.

La’Andre Pittman came in fourth in the discus with a toss of 123 feet, 11 inches. For the girls, the 4x200 relay team of Jocylynn Moore, Jakeeria Walker, Khydajah Harris and Tychristian Smith placed fourth with a time of 1:51.75. Gabrielle Boyd was eighth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:55.10.
