It may be a few weeks away before the four Greenwood-area public schools can hit the practice field, but you can bet your last dollar they are ready to swing into action.
Greenwood High, Amanda Elzy, Leflore County and J.Z. George will all start on Aug. 5 with season openers slated for Aug. 23.
The Bulldogs are coming off an 11-3 campaign, which concluded with a 17-14 loss to Louisville in the North State 4A title game in Clinton Gatewood’s ninth year as head coach. Greenwood will start Gatewood’s season 10 against Leflore County in the Cedric McSwine Classic.
The week before the opener, the Bulldogs will take on Meridian in a jamboree at Louisville High School on Aug. 16.
Greenwood is once again in Region 3-4A with some familiar faces. GHS, which claimed the district title for the sixth straight year in 2018, is joined in the district by Rosa Fort, Yazoo City, Clarksdale and Gentry.
Elzy, which opens its season at Simmons High School, is still in Class 3A but has joined a new district. The Panthers are in Region 3 with Coahoma AHS, Humphreys County, Ruleville and Winona High School.
Veteran coach Sheldon Hodge will be in his third season at the helm.
Leflore County is under the direction of fourth-year coach Eric House. The Tigers were 5-7 overall and made it to the first round of the 2A playoffs.
Leflore was dropped down to Class 1A and is in Region 3 with Coffeeville, Ethel, Simmons, McAdams, Ray Brooks, Shaw, West Bolivar and West Tallahatchie.
The Jaguars went 0-11 in 2018. They host McAdams in their opener. The Jags are in Region 2-2A with Bruce, Calhoun City, East Webster and Eupora.
