Pillow Academy tallied five runs in the top of the eighth inning to knock off Heritage Academy 6-2 Saturday in Columbus to improve to 10-11 overall.
The Mustangs, who play at conference foe Magnolia Heights Tuesday, split a doubleheader with Bayou Academy last Thursday to move to 2-1 in District 1-AAAA. The Colts won the first game 20-1, but Pillow bounced back in the second game 1-0 behind a three-hit pitching performance from Michael Jefcoat.
In Saturday’s contest, Pillow scored its first run in the fifth frame and Heritage plated its run in the sixth. The Mustangs pushed across five in the eighth, and the Patriots scored their second run in the bottom of the inning.
Dayne Sanford led the way at the plate with two singles, a double, an RBI and one run scored. Lawes McCool had two singles and an RBI, and Gavin Lessley had a double, RBI and one run scored.
Lessley (2-1) worked the final four innings to get the win. He gave up both runs on two hits, striking out five. McCool started on the mound, going four innings, allowing two hits, walking three and striking out four.
Nolan Marshall, J.C. Garrard and Eli Simmons had a single each.
In Jefcoat’s gem Thursday, the senior hurler upped his record to 2-3 as he walked two batters and struck out six in throwing 101 pitches.
Pillow got its lone run in the third inning on an RBI by McCool, which plated Lessley. Matthew Jefcoat and Lessley had a single apiece.
In the first game against Bayou, the Colts scored one run in the first, six in the second and 13 in the third. Pillow tallied one run in the third.
Matthew Jefcoat had a double, and Lessley and Nelson Hodges had a single each. McCool had the RBI, and Eli Simmons scored the run.
Marshall (1-4) took the loss as he yielded 10 runs on eight hits in two-plus innings of work. He walked three and fanned four. Three other pitchers — Sanford, Brock Makamson and Hodges — combined to yield 10 runs on six hits, walking a total of five.
- Carroll Academy: The Rebels jumped out to a 9-2 lead after two innings en route to a 13-7 District 2-3A win over visiting Winona Christian School Friday night in Carrollton.
Carroll (17-2, 4-1) plated five in the first, four in the second, three in the third and one in the fifth. WCS tallied two in the first, three in the third and one each in the fourth and fifth innings.
The Rebels got a solo home run from Brennan Blaylock, who had two RBIs and scored two runs. Lofton Holly had a single, scored three times and drove in a pair, and Drew Thomas had a double.
Tyler Brooks had a single and two RBIs, and Hunter Grantham had a single, two RBIs and scored once. Maddox Carpenter and Braxton York had a single each.
York got the win on the mound. He went 21/3 innings, allowing five runs on three hits, walking two and fanning six. Thomas worked the final 42/3 innings, walking four, allowing four hits and striking out two.
Carroll has a big week ahead of it as the Rebels go to Central Holmes Tuesday, host Indianola Thursday and play at Oak Hill Friday. All three are conference games.
