Regarding Wyatt Emmerich’s op-ed column (“A convert on criminal justice,” April 24):
Well, isn’t that sweet? But Wyatt, maybe it would be a little more convincing if, instead of just saying, “Oops, my bad,” you offered to do something positive for the many lives and communities that you and your tough-guy conservative buddies ruined with your misguided policies? To atone in some sort of substantive, meaningful and material way, and maybe to do a little examination of what it is about your outlook that caused you to so devalue other, different lives.
It’s hard not to see the history of criminal justice ever since Willie Horton as anything but a naked, racist political power grab.
