Garbage fees

Regarding the collection of overdue garbage fees, now we see that the state will simply pay the fees for the tardy persons by withholding the bill from their refund check, which is footed by big taxpayers. So, this just withholds money from their gift check.

However, this new state law lets the scofflaws be charged a 25 percent penalty. To go where? Twenty percent goes to the Mississippi Municipal League or the Association of Supervisors. So, these two entities will be receiving more dollars from big taxpayers that were intended for the lesser taxpayers who receive a tax refund.

Editor’s note: The commenter appears to be confusing state and federal tax refunds. Only the federal government provides a refund to low-income filers that can be more than they paid in taxes.
