Editor, Commonwealth:

I was disappointed in The Greenwood Commonwealth’s opinion page Friday, July 5. Most of the page bashed our American president.

I was looking forward to a celebration on our land of the free with uplifting articles and pictures of our great country. I think that the newspaper missed an opportunity to educate its readers about the true America. Instead, we got negative fake news, mostly a repeat of CNN and MSNBC.

We should have a newspaper filled with our joy of being in America the entire week of the Fourth! I daily praise our founders and the Constitution and God for giving us our individual liberty, freedoms, limited government, free markets, private property, religious freedom and peace. America is the world’s best country in which to live.

The Declaration of Independence is one of America’s most consequential documents in stating our form of limited government, every citizen’s inalienable rights, including the right to secure life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

As Joshua Lawson recently wrote in an essay for The Federalist, the Declaration of Independence does not proclaim free health care, free college, cradle-to-grave social welfare and guaranteed happiness. We are offered instead to follow our own dreams in free pursuit of happiness. When the Declaration states that all men are created equal, it means that we are all created in God’s image and we all have the same God-given rights. It does not mean “equality,” as used today in radical plans of income redistribution.

Our Constitution and Declaration of Independence have made us the most free and prosperous nation on earth, with unlimited freedoms and laws to protect those freedoms. The documents guarantee that the people get to tell the government what to do, not the other way around, as Lawson said. But many of our present and new political leaders are threatening to change this by taking the power from the people and giving control to the government. We must not let this happen.

If the Democrats win in 2020, we will lose America as we know it. The new government will centralize all production and decision-making, abolish private property, stamp out religious freedom, take away personal liberties and free markets, and rule all commerce. The government will rule everything and everyone — free health care for all, free college for all, decriminalize illegal immigrants and give them welfare and amnesty, approve abortions at any phase of pregnancy for any reason and paid for by taxpayers, universal basic income for all, and more socialist endowments.

“A government big enough to give you everything you want is strong enough to take everything you have.” — Thomas Jefferson.

P.S. Our president’s speech on the Fourth of July was an excellent history lesson. He only gave the thousands of viewers the history of America and America’s military. He did not have a parade of military armaments, and the flyovers were similar to those we have had at football games and NASCAR races. No personal remarks or ego involved!

Your letter was informed and thrilling to read! If more people would speak out we might have a chance to stop the direction the country has been headed up to 2016. Please continue to help enlighten those who don't really understand or want to understand, what's at stake.

It's kind of hard to take seriously the opinion of a writer who considers a speech to be an "excellent history lesson" when it didn't get the name of the Continental Army right, confused the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812, and stated that George Washington captured an airport.
