REMSENBURG, N.Y. — Robert Woodward Barnwell III of Remsenburg, New York, died in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, on March 3, 2019. Bobby, a Greenwood native, had spent much of his adult life living outside the South, and for the last 14 years, he had lived in New York. The son of Robert Woodward Barnwell Jr. and Augusta Claiborne Barnwell, Bobby was born on June 22, 1941.
Bobby was a graduate of Greenwood High School. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree cum laude from Millsaps College in 1964. He subsequently received a master’s degree from Tulane. After graduation, he taught at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg and served in the U.S. Peace Corps in Afghanistan. Later he taught English in Saudi Arabia until his retirement. After retirement, he married and moved to Remsenburg, New York.
Along with Bobby’s wife, Freear Pollard, survivors include his sister, Craig Barnwell Skates of Ocean Springs; his brother, Claiborne Barnwell, and wife Marion of Jackson; nephew John Skates of Canton, Georgia; niece Craig Whitfield of Madison and her children, Joshua and Jane; nephew Will Barnwell and his wife, Laura McCrain, of Colorado Springs, Colorado.
A graveside memorial service officiated by the Rev. Peter Gray will be held at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Greenwood on May 11 at 11 a.m.
