Jerry Fate “Popeye” Hayes, 72, of Coila died Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2019, at his daughter’s residence.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Wilson & Knight Funeral Home with visitation 1 p.m. until service time. Interment will follow in Hillview Cemetery in Carroll County. The Rev. Howard Beam will officiate.

Mr. Hayes was born Sept. 26, 1946, to Fate Hayes and Kathleen Denley Hayes in Tallahatchie County. He was a member of Vinelife Fellowship Church. He retired from J.J. Ferguson after 50 years in the construction business. He is preceded in death by his wife, Janet Mae Hayes; a son, Gary Fate Hayes Westmoreland; and his parents. Mr. Hayes is survived by his two daughters, Mary Ann Everette and husband Tommy of Greenwood and Judy Hayes Brown of Black Hawk; a son, Shelby Fate Hayes, and wife Kim Clark of Greenwood; a stepson, Dean Woodard, and wife Libby of Greenwood; stepdaughters Nancy White of Forest and Sylvia Wells of Byhalia; 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Cody Beavers, Tommy Everette, Dill Tucker, Matthew Streater, Tony McCluskey, Phillip Olivier, Lee Woodard, Easton Hayes and Joyner Thomas Hayes.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Black Hawk Country Club. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959. An online guestbook may be signed at www.wilsonandknight.com
