September 12, 1946 - December 6, 2019

Richard Upchurch, 73, of Greenwood passed away on Dec. 6, 2019, at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Grenada. Services were at 11 a.m. Monday at Greenwood Delta Funeral Home with interment in Evergreen Cemetery in North Carrollton. The Rev. Lanny Haley, the Rev. Duane Jensen and the Rev. Charlie Jones officiated. Visitation began at 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Mr. Upchurch was a lifelong resident of Leflore and Carroll counties. He graduated from Leflore County High School and served in the Army Reserve. He was a charter member and deacon of Christ Baptist Church. He worked for many years for Upchurch Plumbing as a supervisor and was an avid outdoorsman and a highly skilled jack-of-all-trades. He was a faithful servant of God and was known as everyone’s “Papaw.”

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ulen Upchurch and Mozell Upchurch Gregg; his step-father, Rogers Gregg; and his brothers Vennis Upchurch, Broadus Upchurch and Ralph Upchurch. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sandra Dallas Upchurch, son Scott (Mynell) Upchurch and daughter Amy Upchurch Pleasants, all of Carroll County; six beloved grandchildren, Mary (Derrick) Upchurch Faucheux of Clarksdale and Kaylee, Andrew and Caleb Upchurch and Taylor and Lucy Pleasants, all of Carroll County; one great-granddaughter, Isabella Faucheux; two brothers, Asie Upchurch of Byram and Jerry Upchurch of Carroll County; and two sisters, Bea Ellis of Greenwood and Pam Alford of Leland.

Pallbearers were Richard Blackwell, Robert Upchurch, Mike Upchurch, David Upchurch, Jeremy Upchurch, Marcus Upchurch, Charles Long, Mike Hawkins, Tommy Dallas and Jason McDonald.

Honorary pallbearers were employees of Upchurch Plumbing and members of Christ Baptist Church.

A heartfelt thanks to the compassionate doctors and nurses of the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Tyler Holmes Memorial Hospital in Winona, Greenwood Leflore Hospital and the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Grenada.

Memorials may be made to Christ Baptist Church, 1008 West Claiborne Ave., Greenwood.
