Greenwood Leflore Hospital is getting a new mammography machine.

Officials hope the equipment, which will provide three-dimensional breast exams, will be installed and running in October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“It’s going to be a much better patient experience. ... We’re excited about this technology, and lots of other area hospitals have it,” said Dawne Holmes, the hospital’s chief financial officer, who is also serving as interim chief executive officer.

In a special called meeting Monday, the hospital commissioners by a 3-0 vote approved the $308,394 purchase of the Hologic Selenia Dimensions 3D Performance System. Emma Bell arrived a few minutes late to the meeting and was not there for the vote. Freddie White-Johnson did not attend the meeting.

Holmes said the three-dimensional scanner is the latest technology in screening for breast cancer. The manufacturer claims the equipment will detect 20 to 65 percent more invasive tumors compared to two-dimensional mammography, which the hospital has been using.

After approving the purchase, the board went into executive session for about 45 minutes to discuss strategic planning.

On Tuesday, it went into executive session again for about 1½ hours, this time to discuss personnel. Joining the board for the latter session was Gary Marchand, the former CEO of Memorial Hospital at Gulfport.

Marchand, 66, suddenly retired last summer after spending more than 26 years with the publicly owned hospital, including 15 years as its chief executive.

Harris Powers Jr., chairman of the Greenwood Leflore Hospital Board, declined to say after the closed-door meeting why the four board members met with Marchand. White-Johnson did not attend Tuesday’s meeting either.

It was not known whether the meeting had any connection with the board’s search for a CEO. In August, the board fired Subho Basu, the interim CEO, and asked Holmes to hold down the CEO duties while it looks for a permanent replacement.

No action was taken in either executive session.
