Oak tree down

A large water oak rests Friday near the front of the Grand Boulevard house owned by former Greenwood oncologist Arnold Smith. Soggy ground from heavy winter and spring rains has made trees more susceptible to uprooting.  The damage to the home’s porte cochere appeared to be modest. Smith, who now lives in Jackson, was accused of unsuccessfully trying to arrange in 2012 the assassination of Greenwood attorney Lee Abraham. Smith was found mentally incompetent to stand trial, and a related civil lawsuit filed against him by Abraham was settled out of court in January. Smith’s former residence is for sale.
