Ash Wednesday

Tim Kalich

The Rev. Jose de Jesus Sanchez sprinkles ashes on the top of the head of Bill Malouf during Ash Wednesday services at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Normally, the ritual, which is intended to remind participants of their mortality, involves the priest making the sign of the cross on the worshipper’s forehead, but it was adapted this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For Catholics and many other Christian denominations, Wednesday marked the beginning of Lent, a period of 40 days of reflection and preparation before Easter.
