An early morning shooting Sunday took the life of a 35-year-old Greenwood man, and police are investigating the death as a homicide.
Police Chief Ray Moore identified the victim as Corey Rondrell McCoy, a McNeill Street resident, who was taken to Greenwood Leflore Hospital following the shooting at 210 Ave. H. He said police were alerted by a telephone call from the emergency room around 2 a.m.
“When officers got there, he wasn’t able to talk with them because he had been shot through the jaw,” Moore said.
The chief said McCoy was being transferred by ambulance to a Jackson hospital when he became unstable and was brought back to Greenwood Leflore. The hospital reported around 7:20 a.m. that he had died, Moore said.
At the crime scene on Avenue H, officers discovered two 9 mm handguns, but the chief said it isn’t yet known if the handguns were involved in the shooting because the bullet that hit McCoy is not yet available. An autopsy has been ordered.
“We have three persons of interest in custody,” Moore said. “We do know they were there at the time the altercation took place, and we are still trying to find out what the altercation was over.”
He said, “We have no indication it was accidental.”
