A Greenwood man, Donald Spells, died Wednesday after gunfire erupted shortly before 8 a.m. in the area of McLaurin and Roosevelt streets.

Greenwood Police Chief Ray Moore said Spells had multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to Greenwood Leflore Hospital and from there was transferred to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.

Moore said Spells was shot with a revolver.

“We are almost certain we have the person who did this in custody,” Moore said, but “we are still tracing down rumors. ... At this time, we do not know what the confrontation was about.”

This is the third homicide in Greenwood since Saturday and the ninth in Leflore County this year.
