An apparent car thief was foiled  earlier this week when the stolen car he was driving ran out of gas.

The suspect was behind bars at the Leflore County Jail Friday but had not been charged.

On Wednesday, at about 7:15 p.m., a 32-year-old man from Arkansas forcefully stole an 18-year-old woman’s car while she was gassing up at The Landing Convenience Store & Fueling Center on U.S. 82, Deputy Police Chief Marvin Hammond said.

Hammond said the Mississippi Highway Patrol was notified about the theft as the suspect was driving the car on U.S. 82 toward Winona.

Before the car could turn onto Interstate 55, it ran out of gas and swerved off the side of the road, and the man was soon surrounded by the Highway Patrol, Hammond said.

Hammond said it’s expected that the man will be charged with grand larceny. The deputy chief declined to name the victim but did say that she’s a Greenwood resident.
