Authorities have opened a murder investigation after a man’s body was found Tuesday partially lying in a lake near Sidon.
Leflore County Sheriff Ricky Banks said the Mississippi Crime Lab confirmed Wednesday the man died from multiple gunshot wounds.
Banks, contacted Wednesday night at his home for details about the case, said the victim’s last name was Stewart, but the sheriff did not have the paperwork in front of him to verify the first name. He said the man was in his early 50s and had been living out of a motel room in Greenwood.
The victim was found by a fisherman at Sidon Cutoff Lake, which is located about 3 miles southwest of the town itself, off County Road 511.
Banks said the body was not bloated. Part of it was in the water, and part was resting on tree limbs that had been dumped at the water’s edge.
“We couldn’t tell when we got the body out if there was any foul play on it,” the sheriff said. “We didn’t want to disturb the body before we got it to the Crime Lab.”
He said the investigation is in its preliminary stages and no suspects had been identified as of Wednesday night.
“We’re checking into where (Stewart) was the night before and how he got to where we found him,” Banks said.
The Sheriff’s Department is working with Greenwood police on the case, he said, “because we think it might have started in the city before it came to the county.”
The homicide is the third in Leflore County in 2019. The first two, including Saturday’s fatal shooting of 12-year-old Jordan Lloyd, took place in Greenwood.
