Alumni of Mississippi Valley State University are rallying the community to raise money for the school.
Through the “30 Days of Giving Campaign,” which kicked off Tuesday and ends Oct. 5, alumni are attempting to raise $100,000 via social media, newsletters, MVSU’s website and other platforms.
The money will be donated to MVSU’s general scholarship fund, said Charlie Tolliver, president of the MVSU National Alumni Association. It held a news conference Tuesday at MVSU’s alumni house to explain the fundraising goal.
The amount of money raised within those 30 days will be announced during halftime at MVSU’s homecoming football game on Oct. 5.
However, there’s a second part to the fundraising, with an even bigger goal in mind.
By 2021, the association would like to raise $2.1 million to restore the university’s athletic scoreboards, the Lois Aron Meditation Chapel and the Devera D. Ball National Alumni House, along with providing a robust scholarship fund for current and future students. “We are very grateful to have a very strong alumni association with ties both nationally and internationally,” said Dr. Jerryl Briggs, university president.
