The Town of Sidon kicks off today its summer feeding program for children.

The program is one of several throughout Leflore County, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, that are designed to ensure low-income children  continue to receive nutritious meals when school is out for the summer break.

“The meals are all prepared on site, and the grant pays for a supervisor, a server and the food,” said Sidon Mayor Johnnie Neal.

“It’s a really good program because many children in the summer, if their parents are at work, don’t get a nutritious meal at home or sometimes there’s no meal at all.”

Lunch at Sidon Town Hall, 104 Green St., will be served from noon to 1 p.m. every weekday until July 27.

These meals are available to all children aged 18 and under at no cost. Pre-registration is not required.

Neal said last summer Sidon saw about 50 kids per day at its summer feeding program.

Among the other food sites, the Leflore County School District since June 4 has been providing  breakfast and lunch at Leflore County High School and Amanda Elzy High School. On weekdays at both sites, breakfast is served from 8:30 to 9 a.m. and lunch from 11 a.m. to noon. The county schools’ program runs until July 19.

The Greenwood School District’s summer feeding program ran during most of the month of June, ending June 28.
