A 2-year-old Itta Bena girl was killed Monday evening when she was run over by a pickup truck that her mother was backing out of the driveway.

Leflore County Sheriff Ricky Banks said Trelongina Matthews of Douglas Street was taking her truck to pick up some cool drinks for her six children and other adults in her house about 7 p.m. and thought all of the children were inside.

As she was backing up, she felt the truck hit something and got out to find her daughter, Keala Matthews, beneath the truck, Banks said.

Matthews picked up the girl, placed her in the truck and then drove to Greenwood Leflore Hospital, where the child was pronounced

dead.

As Matthews was on the way to the hospital, an adult in the house called the Sheriff’s Department, and one deputy was sent to the home while another went to the hospital. Banks said at the deputy’s request, Matthews had blood drawn at the hospital.

Banks said the deputy at the house found out no one had seen the little girl leave the house after her mother and had no idea how she got out of the house.

If the blood tests show no drugs or alcohol involved in the incident, no charges will be filed, Banks said.
