A 21-year-old pregnant woman was shot in the back Saturday night in Itta Bena and will likely carry the bullet in her body until her baby is born, relatives said Wednesday.
Tatyana Lowe was in the back seat of a car driven by Christopher Austin when it turned off County Road 514 onto Pine Acre Ranch Road, according to Leflore County Sheriff Ricky Banks.
At that moment, someone in a following car shot twice into the rear of Austin’s car, with one bullet lodging in the trunk and the other hitting Lowe in the back, the sheriff said.
An ambulance took Lowe to Greenwood Leflore Hospital, where doctors told her removing the bullet could endanger the health of her baby, relatives said.
They released Lowe, but she is frequently monitored by doctors concerned about her wound and the baby’s health, according to her relative.
Austin told deputies who responded to the scene that he had an altercation with a man about a week before the shooting.
When he passed a car on the way to Itta Bena on Saturday night, Banks said, Austin told sheriff’s deputies he thought it was the same man.
Police are looking for a gray Ford Crown Victoria with large rims, the sheriff said.
“I think she was just in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Banks said. “It was a problem he had a week before.”
