A Greenwood woman was killed Monday afternoon in the second area fatal head-on collision on U.S. 49 that day.
Clarence Mae Sutton, 76, was pronounced dead at the scene, said Leflore County Coroner Debra Sanders.
Police Chief Ray Moore said his department received a call at about 5:45 p.m. about the crash, which occurred near the Dollar General store along U.S. 49.
Sutton was driving her sedan in the southbound lane when her vehicle collided head-on with a northbound SUV, Moore said. The crash happened on the northbound side, he said.
Moore declined to name the driver of the SUV but did say that she was a 29-year-old resident of Terry.
She was taken to Greenwood Leflore Hospital following the crash but was released around 10 p.m. Monday after being treated for her injuries, the chief said.
There were no passengers in either vehicle, and the accident is still under investigation, Moore said.
According to Sanders, Sutton lived alone. A family member, who declined to be named, said Sutton was born and raised in Vaiden but had lived in Greenwood for the past four decades. Before her retirement, Sutton worked as an elementary school teacher.
Sutton earned a master’s degree in education from Mississippi Valley State University and is survived by two children, her relative said.
Donna Jeane Norris, 71, of Greenwood and Ricky D. Gaines, 58, of Jackson were killed Monday morning in a two-car collision near Sidon.
