There have been three more incidents of gunfire in Greenwood since early Sunday morning, according to Police Chief Jody Bradley.

Police responded to two calls about shots fired around 2 a.m. Sunday, Bradley said. One occurred on Second Avenue and the other on Alla Court. They happened within five minutes of each other and are believed to have involved the same vehicle, Bradley said.

On Monday around midnight, police responded to shots fired along the 600 block of Third Avenue. One person with a “superficial” injury was admitted into Greenwood Leflore Hospital but later released, Bradley said.

He said he doesn’t believe the incidents Sunday and the one Monday are connected.

Since June 10, nine shooting incidents have occurred in Greenwood and the area just beyond the city’s limits, according to authorities.

Two shootings last week claimed the lives of two young men — Jy’quavious Williams and Valdemir Beverly. All but one of Leflore County’s homicides in 2020 as of Tuesday evening have been the result of gun violence.

Other shootings, including the one at midnight Monday, have left eight people injured.

Leflore County Sheriff Ricky Banks could not be reached Tuesday afternoon for an update about any shootings investigated by his office.
