A woman’s club is asking Greenwood residents to pitch in their change to help further beautify the Yanky 72 Memorial.

Altrusa International Inc. of Greenwood has launched its “Pennies for Yanky 72” project, placing its first collection jar at Mississippi Gift Co. in downtown Greenwood.

Loretta Assini, the club’s president, said the plan is to place other jars at retail shops around town.

One idea for the proceeds is to use them to purchase benches to complement the marble, granite and brick monument that commemorates the July 2017 plane crash and the 16 servicemen killed on board. The memorial, designed by Greenwood advertising executive Allan Hammons, is located in Itta Bena on the south side of U.S. 82, across from Mississippi Valley State University.

“It’s beautiful,” Assini said of the memorial, “but there’s no place to sit. Sometimes you want a place where you can sit and contemplate.”

She said another possibility is shrubbery or other landscaping.
