About 200 community supporters gathered at the Historic Elks Building Tuesday evening for fine food and entertainment to benefit the Community Kitchen.
Barbara Biggers, treasurer of the Community Kitchen board, said the annual Celebrity Waiter Dinner is an important fundraiser for the Kitchen.
“We hope to raise $15,000 to $20,000 tonight,” she said. The money goes to a good cause as the Community Kitchen provides a hot meal to 175 to 200 people each weekday at its building at the corner of Johnson and Walthall streets.
“We’re open five days a week, and we feed everyone who walks through the door,” Biggers said.
Carlee Bailey, executive director of the Community Kitchen, said the effort to feed the hungry in Greenwood was started in 2003 by Bill Henderson and the Greenwood Ministerial Association.
Besides the fundraiser, the Community Kitchen is sponsored by churches in the community, individuals, and the United Way of Leflore County, she said.
“This is our biggest fundraiser,” Bailey said. “It is very important to the Community Kitchen.”
