A Greenwood man has been charged with murder in connection with the Nov. 27 fatal shooting of Donald Spells.

The Greenwood Police Department charged James Leahman, 29, 104 Martin Luther King Drive, on Friday.

Chief Jody Bradley said Leahman is the prime suspect in the case.

Spells, 40, died the morning of Nov. 27 after gunshots erupted before 8 a.m. in the area of McLaurin Street and Roosevelt Avenue.

Spells, who was shot several times, was first taken to Greenwood Leflore Hospital and then transferred to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, where he died hours later.

Former Police Chief Ray Moore had said at the time that Spells was shot with a revolver and that the police had in custody a suspect they believed was responsible for the shooting.

Bradley confirmed that the man held in custody was Leahman.

He did not provide any more details about the investigation other than to say that Leahman’s case may be presented to the grand jury in January.
