A Greenwood man has been charged with attempted murder in connection with a shootout that occurred last week when he allegedly found his ex-girlfriend with another man, only to have the other man shoot back.

Both men ended up in the hospital, but Jacolby Whitehead was charged Wednesday with attempted murder, two counts of aggravated assault, and illegal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The Leflore County Sheriff’s Department said Whitehead, 24, of 406 Buckeye Road, went to his ex-girlfriend’s house at 104 Grenada Blvd. on Jan. 3 at about 9:10 p.m. and found her with the other man.

According to the Sheriff’s Department, when Whitehead tried to shoot his ex-girlfriend, he missed and instead hit the other man, who then pulled his own gun and shot Whitehead.

Both men were taken by ambulance to the hospital, and Whitehead was transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.

He was brought back to Leflore County Wednesday and is currently in the county jail.
