A Greenwood High School student has been taken to the Leflore County Juvenile Detention Center after being caught with a gun on campus Friday morning.
In a statement, Dr. Mary Brown, Greenwood school superintendent, said resource officers detained the unnamed student and confiscated the weapon before a majority of students arrived on campus.
"The incident was handled professionally by the officers and staff, who followed the district policy regarding possession of weapons on school property,” Brown said. “We don’t anticipate students bringing weapons to school, but when it happens, our trained personnel follows the procedures.”
Brown did not say whether the gun was loaded.
The incident follows two gun-related incidents that occurred earlier this school year.
In early September, an eighth-grade student at Greenwood Middle School withdrew from the Greenwood Leflore Consolidated School District after the student brought a loaded gun to the middle school in late August.
A school resource officer detected the gun when the unnamed student arrived at school.
Later that month, another student of the district was arrested by the Leflore County Sheriff’s Department after the student brought a gun to Bulldog Stadium during the Greenwood High-Cleveland Central football game.
Sheriff Ricky Banks did not say how old that student was or what school the student attended.
