Sonny and Mattie Young married on March 1, 1969, with the blessings of their parents, the late John and Ina Young and Lewis Delaney and the late Mattie Sue Delaney.

Their family grew as God blessed Sonny and Mattie with two daughters, Jennifer Kay and Wendolyn, within their first two years of marriage.

Mattie recalls that giving birth was “one of the most magnificent experiences” in her life. She also became a loving stepmother to Vickie, Michael, Anthony, Eric and Edwin. The extended family blended into a loving home, full of laughter.

Now, the Youngs enjoy four grandchildren — Carlos, Justin, Ryan and Jenesis — and two great-grandchildren — Santana and Desiree.

Sonny and Mattie have lived in Cruger all of their marriage and reared their two daughters to love Christ, represent themselves with respect and integrity, show love to everybody and reach for the stars.

Sonny and Mattie enjoy life as retirees and enjoy the comfort of their home and family.

Sonny retired from Holmes County schools after more than 30 years. Mattie retired from the Mississippi Highway Patrol after more than 35 years of service. They enjoy spending time with their children and family and hosting events and family dinners in their home.

Dr. Jennifer Young Wallace and Wendolyn Young celebrate the Golden Wedding Anniversary of their parents, Learnear “Sonny” Young and Mattie Young.

A private, 300-guest vow renewal ceremony will be held at the Leflore County Civic Center on Saturday.

Their daughter, Dr. Jennifer Young Wallace, an ordained minister, will perform the ceremony. Their daughter, Wendolyn, will serenade them.
