The Greenwood Little Theatre is gearing up to hold auditions for its upcoming production of “Annie.”
Auditions for the musical are set for Monday and Tuesday for adult roles and Aug. 10 and Aug. 11 for children’s roles. The auditions will be held in the parish hall at The Episcopal Church of the Nativity, 400 Howard St.
The play is being directed by Taylor Buchanan and David Dallas and will run for eight shows, December 14-22.
“There are lots of fun roles for all ages,” Buchanan, who is handling the music direction for the show, which was originally produced on Broadway in 1977. “It’s going to be a fantastic event for Greenwood Little Theatre and our entire community, particularly as an offering during the Christmas season.”
Buchanan was recently featured in the role of “Tateh” in Greenwood Little Theatre’s summer production of “Ragtime.”
Known for such songs as “Tomorrow” and “It’s a Hard Knock Life,” “Annie” is based on Harold Gray’s comic strip, “Little Orphan Annie.”
Buchanan added, “It’s a great story with so many great songs and characters.”
He added, “We are hoping to get whole families involved. Parents and children. It’s a great way for parents to be involved in their child’s growth and artistic expression and to have a little fun themselves.”
Playing the role of “Annie” is a unique opportunity for young female performers, highlighting their singing and acting skills.
“All the children’s roles in ‘Annie’ require a lot of skill, energy and comic timing.” Co-Director Dallas said. “It’s a fun show for young people to watch and take part in.”
The original “Annie” on Broadway was portrayed by Andrea McArdle, and Dallas said it’s one of the reasons he wanted to direct this musical.
“When I was in high school, I was in a theatrical production with Andrea McArdle not long after she finished playing the title role on Broadway.
“I’ve been involved in a couple of productions of ‘Annie’ and am grateful to be working with Taylor and the folks at GLT on this. Like many people, I love the story and am excited to be involved.”
