GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) — A Mississippi man has been sentenced to serve 15 years in prison for a brutal attack on an ex-girlfriend.

Local media in Gulfport report the woman testified that Williams started an argument on July 5, 2016, and ordered her to stay in her bedroom when she tried to leave. She said he stabbed her in the chest, arm, back, neck and legs.

The woman's roommate banged on the door, interrupting the attack, and called 911.

Williams fled and police arrested him the same day at a relative's home.

Local media report that a jury on Wednesday found Williams guilty of aggravated assault. He was sentenced to the maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, with 15 years to serve in prison and the remainder on probation.
