J.Z. George’s baseball team put up a valiant effort as the Jaguars dropped a 10-8 decision in eight inning to Region 3-3A foe Charleston High School Tuesday in North Carrollton.

The Jags, who fall to 3-12 overall and 1-4 in district, had the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the eighth frame. They had already scored two runs to pull within one at 10-9, but the Tigers recorded the last out to secure the win.

“We played a tough game (Tuesday night),” said J.Z. George head coach Will Rodgers. “We made some crucial errors in the top of the seventh and eighth innings, but our kids battled to the very end.”

Sophomore hurler Michael Bankston did his part to keep the Jags in the game as he went 62/3 innings, allowing six runs (all earned) on 13 hits, walking one and striking out 11. Kendrick Head pitched the final 11/3 innings, giving up four runs on five hits, walking two and fanning one. He suffered the loss on the mound.

Bankston also contributed at the plate with a 2-for-5 showing. he a single, double, two RBIs and scored two runs. WilTavious Williams had a two-run homer, a single, three RBIs and scored one run, while Robby Clunan had a double.

Nathan Carpenter had a single and RBI, and Brandon McKenzie, Jacob Johnson and Kendrick Head had a base hit each. Johnson walked three times and scored three runs, and Athan Shute had an RBI. Josh May scored a pair of runs.

J.Z. George played host to Holmes County Central Wednesday. They Jaguars are slated to entertain Region 3 foe Ruleville Central for a doubleheader Friday starting at 4 p.m.

n Leflore County: The Tigers were outscored 33-3 in a doubleheader played against Region 2-2A opponent North Side High School Tuesday in Shelby.

In the first game, North Side came out on top 17-2 as Kevon Birdlong (0-6) took the loss on the mound. He went three innings, allowing 17 runs on five hits, walking 13 and fanning seven.

Birdlong had a single, double and RBI, and DeQuarionne Jones had a triple. Derrick Singleton tacked on a single.

In the second contest, the Gators came out on top 16-1 as they scored 10 runs in the first and six in the second. Leflore tallied its lone run in the second.

Andres Payne (0-3) suffered the loss as he went one inning, allowing 10 runs on seven hits, walking eight and fanning one. Singleton worked one frame, yielding six runs on three hits, walking three and striking out two.

Jones had a triple, and Kewon Wylie had a double for the Tigers (1-13 overall, 0-8 in league).

Leflore is at West Bolivar Friday at 4 p.m.

n Amanda Elzy: The Panthers’ road trip to Belzoni was an extra long one as they dropped a pair of Region 3-3A games to Humphreys County Tuesday. The Cowboys won the first game 12-2 and took the second contest 15-4.

Elzy (3-8 overall, 0-6 in district) is at league foe Yazoo County Friday.
