Leflore County High School’s baseball team put together its best performance of the season in a 19-18 loss at Shaw High School Wednesday.
The Tigers (0-11 overall) collected 15 hits at the plate, but were hurt by sloppy defense in the field.
Shaw tallied four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, stealing home with two outs to secure the win. The Hawks tacked on three runs each in the first and fourth innings, one in the second, and eight in the third.
Leflore County scored two runs in the first, one each in the third and fifth frames, four in the second, three in the fourth and seven in the top of the seventh inning.
Kevon Birdlong (0-5) took the loss. Birdlong, the third pitcher of the game for the Tigers, went 22/3 innings, walking five and allowing six runs. Kewon Wylie started and lasted 12/3 innings, giving up four runs. Freshman Xavier Mitchell went 11/3 innings, allowing nine runs.
Derrick Singleton had a banner day on offense as he had two singles, a double, drove in six runs and scored three times. Daquarrian Jones also fared well as he had two singles, a triple and collected five RBIs.
Andres Payne had four RBIs with three singles and a triple, and Birdlong had three singles and three RBIs. Dekari Johnson had a single and scored two runs, and Will Gates had a single.
Leflore returns to the diamond Monday at home against McAdams at 3:30 p.m.
In games played Thursday, Carroll Academy was at Oak Hill, O’Bannon was at Elzy, and J.Z. George played host to O’Bannon.
