The Pillow Academy Mustangs notched their sixth straight victory on the diamond.
The Mustangs scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take the lead for good at 7-3 and held on for an 8-4 victory over Humphreys Academy Tuesday at Pillow.
“The guys have played a good stretch of games. Between pitching, defense, and hitting, we have had to have each aspect of the game step up in different games. I have been very proud of the way our guys have handled all the rain and just kept with the plan,” said PA coach Jud Thigpen, who has lost 10 games this spring due to weather cancellations.
On Tuesday, the Mustangs (7-1) had to rally to keep their winning ways going. With two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Eli Simmons singled on a 2-0 count, sparking a four-run outburst in the frame.
Drew Lamb led Pillow to victory on the mound in relief. He lasted four innings, allowing two hits and one run while striking out seven. Shane Houston Stephens threw the final two innings to record the save.
Lamb, an eighth-grader, threw 75 pitches over four innings, with 46 going for strikes.
Cody Holmes started the game on the mound, surrendering two runs on zero hits over one inning while striking out three.
Pillow racked up eight hits. Simmons and Stephens each had two hits, including a double apiece.
Lake Giachelli added a double, scored a run and drove in another.
