Sam Hilliard Vickers, 85, of Alvin, Texas, passed away Sunday, Feb. 24, 2019, in Houston, Texas. 

Sam was born on June 21, 1933, in Ruleville and was a resident of Itta Bena until moving to Alvin 11 years ago. He worked for many years in the trucking industry for MS Carriers. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, where he was stationed in Frankfurt, Germany. He was a communications officer who sent and received Morse code. 

Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Ruby Lee Vickers; his wife Ginny “Memee” Vickers; and a son, Steve Vickers. 

Sam is survived by his wife, Mary Vickers; a daughter, Vicky Clark, and husband Jimmy; a son, Chris Vickers, and wife Donna; a stepdaughter, Pam Yarborough and husband Tim; stepsons Don Carmeans and wife Robin, Wayne Carmeans and wife Kathy, and Kevin Carmeans and wife Markay; a sister, Josephine Gullett; a brother, James Lewis Vickers, and wife Shirley; 14 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, numerous other relatives and friends. 

Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Wilson and Knight Funeral Home in Greenwood, with funeral services to follow immediately at 11 a.m. The Rev. Chris Owensby will officiate. Interment will follow in Itta Bena Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Gray Vickers, Eric Vickers, David Hodges Jr., Scott Hodges, Will Hodges and Ryan Hodges.
